Usually, people who watch Russian Systema training videos conclude that this art is ineffective for real self-defense situations. And this is understandable! But why this perception? Because Systema is not APPARENT. This is something hard to explain, but I'll give it a try.

What do I mean by Systema not being apparent? Simply put, it means YOU DON’T SEE EVERYTHING THAT IS GOING ON. There are subtle aspects that cannot be perceived in a video.

Let me explain a little bit further. Even after watching a class in person, one might think Systema doesn't work. Again, Systema is not apparent: YOU DON’T SEE EVERYTHING THAT IS HAPPENING.

Most people are used to SEEING that techniques work, that what they see is OBVIOUSLY effective. A punch is obviously effective, a kick is obviously effective, a choke is obviously effective, a guard is obviously a fighting stance. Everything is obvious and easy to see. Well, Systema has punches, kicks, chokes, and much more, but it’s not convincing... Why?

The main reason why in videos Systema seems ineffective is attacks DON’T LOOK real. They are not full-speed, full-force attacks like in other types of training.

It’s important noting that one can only train with the so-(wrongly)called realistic attacks if they wear protective gear and have restrictions on allowed techniques and target areas, or the training session would end very quickly, with one or more seriously injured... or worst. Unfortunately, this is a misunderstanding of what realistic training is. By nature, training is not reality and will never meet all the conditions of real self-defense. How realistic is hitting at full speed and full force when you’re wearing protective gear and restricting some attacks and targets? Not much, I must say.

We don't wear protective gear in Systema; any attack and body target is allowed. Our protection is controlling speed and power. Having control doesn't mean there is no impact or pain. On the contrary, training Systema hurts... and a lot. But training with control is necessary to avoid serious injuries. In fact, without protective gear, strikes don't need too much speed or power to be painful or a lock to break something. This is why you don't see in Systema the brutality you see in other martial arts.

Let's be honest: no training methodology is realistic. Everyone has one or more limitations or safety restrictions to reduce the risk of serious injuries. But in a real self-defense situation, there are no limitations.

Neither methodology is more realistic. Both are just that: training.

This topic is further explained in the article: How Real is "Realistic" Training? You can read the article at: http://systemarusocf.wixsite.com/peru/single-post/2017/11/01/%C2%BFQU%C3%89-TAN-REAL-ES-EL-ENTRENAMIENTO-%E2%80%9CREALISTA%E2%80%9D-HOW-REAL-IS-%E2%80%9CREALISTIC%E2%80%9D-TRAINING

Another aspect of Systema training that gives the impression that the art is ineffective is the non-aggressive attitude of the practitioners, both physical and emotional.

This attitude is characteristic of Systema because the attacker should not perceive you as a threat. This means, in Systema you specifically train to NOT seem to be fighting, NOT stand in a threatening guard, NOT make aggressive gestures, NOT show intention to fight. The reason is that any action that presents you as a threat will alert the attacker's defensive mechanisms. He will be ready to attack and also defend himself. But, if the attacker sees you as prey, if he doesn’t perceive you as a threat, he will be overconfident, focusing only on attacking and neglecting his defenses. It’s easier to defend from someone who has lowered his defensive mechanisms. This psychological aspect of self-defense is well understood in Systema and taken advantage of. But for others, this non-aggressive attitude is a sign of weakness and inefficiency.

But the fact that you don't seem ready to fight doesn’t mean you are not ready to do so.

Another reason Systema APPEARS ineffective is that most people are used to SEE that other martial arts always use specific guards, forms, and movements. For most people to learn to fight, YOU MUST LOOK LIKE YOU ARE FIGHTING. But they are wrong.

As I wrote before, Systema SHOULD NOT LOOK LIKE YOU ARE FIGHTING. There are no guards, specific forms, or techniques to memorize. Using a neutral, relaxed, and extremely versatile stance, one has total freedom of movement to launch very powerful strikes and efficiently apply any lock, throw, and other actions from NON-CONVENTIONAL AND UNEXPECTED angles and positions. Most importantly, the aggressor won't "see" your attacks coming until it's too late. Systema's attacks look weak, without proper form, and ineffective, but once you feel them, you'll change your mind right away.

Systema's relaxed and non-structured stance also offers unique and incredible fluidity, spontaneity, and subtleness. This neutral posture allows you to imperceptibly punch, kick, throw, lock, choke, or do whatever you want. And it is almost impossible to perceive for the untrained eye (unless they watch the video in slow motion). The more experienced the Systema practitioner, the less you will see.

And, of course, also other aspects cannot be perceived; they must be felt. But that’s the topic of another article.

Yes, Systema APPEARS weak, ineffective, and improvised, but—in fact—those are its biggest strength.
